The Holy Cincture or Belt is the one sacred heirloom that remains from the earthly life of the Theotokos. It is kept today at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. The Theotokos herself wove it from camel hairs and was even buried while wearing it. Miraculously, it was given to the Apostle Thomas. From that time, the Holy Cincture was held by the Christians of Jerusalem until the Emperor Arcadius brought it to Constantinople. Eventually, it was brought to Mount Athos by the Emperor John VI Cantacouzenus between 1341 and 1354. The same emperor resigned from his office and became a monk at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi. The Holy Cincture has worked many miracles. In particular, it has been given the special blessing of helping childless women conceive. Its feast is on the 31st of August.
