This is a copy of the icon Panagia Soumela, which is held at the Monastery of the same name on Mt. Vermio. It was originally held in the Monastery of Panagia Soumela built on Mt. Mela in Trebizond by two Athenian monks, Barnabas and Sophronios. According to tradition, this wonderworking icon was carved by Luke the Evangelist on wood, and constituted, together with the holy water, the Monastery’s main reference point. However, the Turks’ barbarous behavior towards the monasteries in the Pontos region led to the Monastery’s total destruction in 1922. The monks hid the icon, and in 1931, at the insistence of Eleftherios Venizelos, one of the monastery’s two monks traveled from Thessaloniki to Pontos in order to bring the icon back with him. The construction of the new Panagia Soumela monastery began on Mt. Vermio in 1951 and today constitutes the main reference point for Pontian Hellenism in Greece. Naturally, the famous icon of Panagia Soumela found a “home” there. Its memory is commemorated every year on 15 August together with a crowd of faithful, both Pontian and otherwise, venerating the Holy icon. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
