This is a copy of the wonderworking icon of the Theotokos “the Joy of All,” which belongs to the sacred treasures of the Holy Monastery of Strofades and Saint Dionysios on Zakynthos. According to tradition, the empress Irene Laskarina stopped at the Monastery of Strofades on her way past Zakynthos and prayed at the icon of the Theotokos for her sister to be healed. The Theotokos granted Irene’s wish and the empress hastened to proclaim the miracle to the monks, promising to help them however they desired. They requested that she reinforce the Monastery’s defenses so as to protect them from pirate raids. Irene fulfilled their wish. They thanked the Theotokos and named her icon “The Joy of All” in expression of their happiness. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
