The icon of the Theotokos of Pochayiv was brought by the Greek Metropolitan Neophytos to Russia in the 16th century, while he was touring that country seeking alms. He gave the icon as a blessing to Anna Goyskaya, the pious woman who hosted him. In 1597, when Anna’s brother Phillip was healed miraculously by the Most Holy Theotokos, their family thought it right to give the icon to the neighbouring Lavra of Pochayiv. In that region, Vladimir the Great had founded the episcopate of Vladimir Volynia and built the Cathedral Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos in the city in the 10th century. In the 13th century, the Mother of God appeared to two hermits on the rock where even today her footprints are visible. This quickly became one of the most revered sites of pilgrimage within Russian Orthodoxy. The holy water spring that burst forth miraculously from the dry rocks has over the centuries worked many miracles. The memory of the Theotokos of Pochayiv is honoured on the 23rd of July and the 8th of September. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
