After the Persons of the Holy Trinity, the Mother of God is considered by the Church to be the chief contributor to the realization of God’s plan of salvation for the human race. This particular icon is a copy of the icon of the Theotokos Odigitria. It dates from the 15th century. The original icon can be found at the “Saint Catherine of Sinai” Museum of Christian Art in Crete. The Mother of God is depicted from the front holding Christ in her left arm and extending her right hand in supplication before her chest. Christ, also facing forward, is blessing with His right hand and holding a rolled-up scroll in His left. In each of the upper corners of the icon are the archangels Michael and Gabriel, as half-figures, holding open scrolls. Work of iconographer Chrisanthos Karagiannakis.
