This icon of the Theotokos was discovered on July 8th, 1579 AD in the city of Kazan. Its discovery underneath the city caused it to be considered the patroness of the Kazan region. The Theotokos herself revealed the place of the icon to a little girl named Matrona, who saw the Mother of God with her own eyes. It is the most exalted icon of the Russian Orthodox Church and it remained for centuries at the Monastery of the Theotokos, which was built at the very place where the icon was discovered. This portrayal of the Theotokos was considered to be the protector of Russia, at least until 1904, when the icon was stolen from the church in Kazan. Previously, the Russian Government called upon the Mother of God to protect their country during the Polish invasion of 1612, the Swedish invasion of 1709, as well as during the invasion of Napoleon in 1812. Two cathedral churches in Russia, one in Moscow and the other in Saint Petersburg, are dedicated to the Theotokos of Kazan. The Theotokos of Kazan is celebrated on the 21st of July as well as the 4th of November, the Day of National Unity in Russia. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
