The story of the holy icon of the Theotokos Giatrissa (or Healer) takes places in the 1920s, when a woman named Maria, who was a midwife, was spending the summer at the house of a resident of Loutrakio, Maria Sokou, to visit the nearby thermal springs. After a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, Maria brought a gift to Ms. Sokou, an icon of the Theotokos holding the infant Christ on her left side. In Jerusalem, the seller had told Maria to give the icon to God-fearing people, who believed in God and would light an oil lamp every day before the Holy Icon. Maria told all of this to Maria Sokou, adding that 20 days after she had given away the icon, she too would die. This happened. Today in the centre of the city of Loutrakio, the church of the Theotokos Giatrissa is a prominent fixture, a steadfast pillar of the residents’ faith. Its feast day is on the 8th of September.
