It is considered the “the common household protectress” of all the Athonite Monasteries, because it contains within it the seals of all 20 Monasteries. This icon was present at the Sunday Orthros service on June 10th, 982 AD, when the helper monk of the Dormition of the Theotokos, a cell of Pantokrator Monastery, and the Archangel Gabriel chanted the entire service together. The Archangel added to the beginning of the hymn “More honourable than the cherubim…” the verse “It is truly meet…”. The “Mother of God Karyotissa”, adorned within a case of gold and silver adheres to the strictest models of Byzantine art and accompanies every year the procession held on the Monday after Pascha. Work of the iconographer Lazaros Pechlivanidis.
