An exact copy of the icon of the Theotokos Gerontissa, which Alexius I Comnenus gave to the Holy Monastery of Pantokrator on Mount Athos. It owes its name to a miracle that occurred while an Orthodox Abbot was preparing for death. God revealed to him the day on which he was to die. His final wish before he departed this life was to commune of the Holy Sacrament. However, the priest-monk, who was on his way to give him communion, was late and so an angry voice was heard coming from the icon of the Theotokos. She asked the priestmonk why he had delayed and had not fulfilled the Abbot’s request. As was natural, the priestmonk complied and did his duty. From that time, the icon has been called “Thetokos Gerontissa” (“Eldress”), because she came to the aid of the elderly Abbot. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
