This miracle-working icon was painted in 1563 and since 1646 can be found at the Holy Monastery of Docheiariou on Mount Athos. The monk in charge of the monastery refectory was blinded, because he would pass by the icon constantly, even in the night, holding in his hands burning torches, ignoring a voice telling him to stop letting the smoke blacken the image. Understanding the error of his disobedience, the monk pleaded to be forgiven for his sin of negligence and to be given back his sight, so that he could again behold her Holy Icon, to glorify the Theotokos and give her thanks. The Mother of God heard his prayer and restored his sight. It should also be mentioned that the name “quick-to-hear” refers to the quick assent to those who call upon the Mother of God, granting them whatever they desire if it be profitable for their salvation.
