An exact copy of the icon of the Theotokos Portaitissa from the Holy Monastery of Iviron on Mount Athos. According to tradition, it was painted by the Evangelist Luke himself. The icon belonged to a virtuous widow, who threw the icon into the sea in order to save it from the iconoclasts. Miraculously, the icon stood upright and floated to the Holy Mountain. One day, the elders of the monastery of Iviron saw an icon of the Theotokos in the sea. As they approached, however, it only seemed to get further away. Saint Gabriel, at the command of the Mother of God, walked into the water and the icon immediately came into his embrace. Initially, they placed the icon in the church of the Monastery, but it would disappear and reappear above the monastery gate. This happened many times. Eventually, the Theotokos appeared again to Elder Gabriel and told him to stop bothering the icon, because it did not come to the Monastery to be protected by the monks but rather to protect and guard them. From that time, the icon has remained in its place in the chapel to the left of the central gate of Iviron. For this reason, it was given the name “Portaitissa”, from the Greek word “porta”, meaning door. Work of iconographer Lazaros Pechlivanidis.
