An exact copy of the icon of the Theotokos Paramythia (“Consolation”) from the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. According to the tradition, the original expression on the faces of both the Lord and His mother as well as their body posture were changed after the following miracle. In 807 AD, pirates disembarked secretly on the shores of Athos to attack the Monastery of Vatopedi. After the end of Orthros, the abbot heard the voice of the Mother of God tell him not to open the gates of the Monastery, but to go up to the walls and send the pirates away. Turning his gaze toward the icon, he saw the Divine Infant extending His hand and covering the lips of His mother so that the monks could not hear her encouragement, but that they would be punished as they deserved. The Mother of God, however, pushed the hand of her Son away and repeated the same words. Saved from the pirates, the monks gave thanks to the Theotokos and named this icon “Paramythia”, which means consolation or softening in Greek. The icon has its feast day on the 21st of January.
