An exact copy of the icon of the Theotokos Esphagmeni, a wall-icon from 14th century found in the narthex of the chapel of St. Demetrius in the main church of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. There was a hierodeacon, who while fulfilling his obedience, would come to the refectory late each day. One day, the monk in charge of the refectory refused to serve him his food because of his tardiness. The upset hierodeacon returned to the church and struck the icon of the Mother of God with a knife. The icon began to bleed, and the monk was struck blind. He remained blind for three years, weeping constantly before the icon and begging the Theotokos to forgive him. After three years had passed, the Mother of God restored his sight but promised that she would punish the hand with which he had committed the sin. Indeed, when he died, his right hand remained unchanged and is preserved to this day. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
