In the 10th century, during the many attacks of the Arabs on the Monastery, the hierodeacon Sabbas managed to throw the icon into the well of the Holy Altar, along with the cross of Saint Constantine the Great and a lit oil lamp that always burned in front of the icon. The monastery was pillaged, and Sabbas and the other monks were taken captive and brought to Crete. When Saint Sabbas was freed, he returned to the monastery. Then it is said that he found the icon and the cross, standing upright in the water and the oil lamp was still lit as it was seventy years ago.
