An exact copy of the icon of the Theotokos Vimatarissa or Ktitorissa from the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. It is located in the apse of the Holy Altar in the main monastery church. In the 10th century, during the many attacks of the Arabs on the Monastery, the hierodeacon Sabbas managed to throw the icon into the well of the Holy Altar, along with the cross of Saint Constantine the Great and a lit oil lamp that always burned in front of the icon. The monastery was pillaged, and Sabbas and the other monks were taken captive and brought to Crete. When Saint Sabbas was freed, he returned to the monastery. Then it is said that he found the icon and the cross, standing upright in the water and the oil lamp was still lit as it was seventy years ago. From that time, this icon of the Theotokos leads all of the monastery’s processions. Its feast day is on the Tuesday of Bright Week, on which a great procession is led. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
