This is an exact replica of the icon of the Theotokos Antifonitria (the Dissentor), which is held at the Holy Monastery of Vatopaidi on Mt. Athos. It follows the strict version of the iconographic model of the Theotokos Hodegetria. It was called Antifonitria because of the Theotokos’ forbiddance of the empress Gala Plakidia, wife of Roman emperor Constantius III and daughter of emperor Theodosius I, to enter the mountain. As the empress traveled towards Constantinople, she sailed by Mt. Athos and desired to visit the Monastery of Vatopaidi. As she went to enter the Katholikon (main church) by the small side door, she heard a voice saying to her, “What do you want here, woman, in the monks’ home? Stay where you are and don’t take even one more step.” Astonished, the empress left the Monastery and built a chapel to Saint Demetrios at her own personal expense. Through this marvelous occurrence, the prohibition to all women to enter Mt. Athos was both ratified and established. This is the work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
