Icon with water-gilding on natural linden wood. The wood has been prepared in heat and gilded with gold leaf 24K, in accordance with traditional Byzantine techniques. The icon has been painted with egg-tempera paints for best performance and endurance of colors used. The colors were chosen based on studies and analyses of older icons by renowned iconographers, after ARTIS had first conducted conservation treatments on them.
An exact copy of the icon of the Theotokos Elaiovrytissa, found at the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. Its name comes from the following miracle: Gennadios, the monk in charge of the monastery’s oil, decided that for economic reasons they would only be able to use oil for the needs of the church, because there was such a shortage. The cook of the Monastery protested and, trusting in the providence of the Mother of God, he ordered that oil be given for the needs of the brotherhood. One day, when he went to use the final reserves that remained in storage, as he had reckoned it, he saw oil overflowing from the reservoir that reached all the way to the door. The Monastery honours the monk Gennadios as a saint, and it is said that this icon gives off a miraculous fragrance. It is sometimes also called “Docheiarissa” (after the Greek word Docheio, a container for olive oil). The memory of this miracle is honoured on the Friday of Bright Week.
