Saint Leonidas was Bishop of Athens. He came from the region of Troizenas, and he conducted pastoral work all throughout the Epidaurus region. He contracted a close spiritual relationship with seven women, a bond of which we do not know the exact beginning, but there is clear evidence of the holy nature of their relationship. On Holy Saturday of 250 AD, Saint Leonidas, with his entourage of seven women, went to Corinth to see the procurator Venustus. He asked them to deny their faith if they wished to escape punishment, but all of them refused to deny their faith. Thus, they were condemned to death. The pagans tortured and hanged Saint Leonidas. Then they threw his body along with those of the seven women into the sea. Christians from Epidaurus, who had beheld from a distance the Saint’s dramatic final moments, collected their dead bodies and buried them. His memory is honoured on the 15th of April.
