Saint Sergei was born to pious parents in 1314 AD in the city of Rostov. From a young age, he loved prayer, and he attended the services of the church with great zeal. Following the ideals of Christian monasticism, he chose to live in isolation in the thick forests of Moscow for many years. On account of difficult conditions, he eventually went to live with other monks. He was ordained to the priesthood, and he became Abbot of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity. During his tenure as Abbot, he continued his handicrafts and wore old, ragged cassocks. Because of his contribution to the organisation and spread of monasticism in Russia in that period, he is known as the “patriarch of the Russian monastic revival”. Additionally, he was sent on a number of diplomatic missions, the most important of which was his drawing up of a perpetual peace between Moscow and Ryazan in 1385. He reposed peacefully in 1392 and his memory is honoured on the 25th of December. Work of ARTIS Gilding & Restoring.
