Saint Ephraim was from the East and born in the city of Nisibis in Mesopotamia, likely in 308 AD. From a young age, he was given instruction in the faith and how to live virtuously by Iakovos, the local Bishop, who later ordained him to the diaconate. However, the Saint refused to be ordained to the priesthood. He embraced the monastic life at a very young age and, with the illumination of the Holy Spirit, he composed many theological writings. It was he who refuted the heretic Apollinarius and led many heretics to return to the Christian faith of their fathers. In the year 370 AD, he visited Saint Basil the Great in Caesarea of Cappadocia and, a little afterward, the Fathers and Ascetics of Egypt. He reposed in peace in the year 373 AD and his memory is honoured on the 28th of January. Work of the iconographer Pechlivanidis Lazaros.
