Alexander Yaroslavich “Nevsky” (1220 – 1263 AD) was one of the most important figures in medieval Russia and is a Saint of the Russian Church. He was leader of the Republic of Novgorod and, afterwards, of all of Russia during a very difficult period for the eastern Slavic world. Alexander was born in Pereslavl on the 30th of May, 1220 AD. Seeing that he could not wear the crown of Vladimir, at the age of 16 he accepted an offer to become the Duke of the Feudal Republic of Novgorod. Thus, he left his homeland to establish himself in Novgorod, under conditions that were not at all favourable. During the most difficult period in the history of Russia – the first half of the 13th century – Alexander Nevsky managed to protect the Russian people from many invasions. Simultaneously, he preserved intact the Orthodox faith and the Slavic character of the Russian people. The Russian Orthodox Church declared Alexander Nevsky a Saint in 1547. His memory is celebrated on the 23rd of November. Work of the iconography studio of the H.C. of the Ascension of the Lord in Mount Athos.
