Saint Artemios of Verkola was born in the village of Dvina Verhol around 1532 AD. He was the offspring of pious parents and was possessed of meekness, kindness and goodness. In 1545 twelve-year-old Artemios and his father were faced with a sudden storm. A thunderbolt struck just above them and Artemios died instantly. People believed that this was a sign of God's judgment and so they left the body in a pine forest without a funeral or burial. A few years later, the reader of the village saw a light above the place where Artemios' body was located. Thus, he was transferred to the church of Saint Nikolaos in 1577, where it was proved that his holy relics are a source of numerous healings. His memory is commemorated on October 20. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
