Saint Maximus the Confessor was born to wealthy, noble parents in Constantinople in 580 AD. He was elevated to the rank of arch-secretary by the Emperor Heraclius. He left this position quickly, however, so that he could come to the defence of the truths of the Christian Faith, before the looming threat of Monothelitism. He became a monk and began a harsh and unrelenting struggle against the heretics. In this struggle, he encountered many obstacles, mainly from the Emperor Constans, who championed the cause of the Monothelites, going so far as to convene a robber council, which both condemned the Saint and even gave him over to the eparch of the city for punishment. The authorities had him scourged with a whip and then his tongue cut out and his right hand amputated. His mutilated body endured miraculously so that he would live for another three years. After a brief period of illness, he reposed while still in exile, in Lazica Pontica in 662 AD. His memory is honoured on the 21st of January. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
