Saint Menas was born in Egypt in the 3rd century AD to pagan parents. Despite the environment in which he grew up, he became a Christian. Growing up, he chose to pursue a career in the Roman army. However, he could not bear the status of a soldier/persecutor of Christians and thus escaped to the adjacent mountain. There he lived and practiced fasting, vigilance and prayer. Thus, at the age of about fifty, after a divine revelation that the time for his martyrdom had come, he confessed Christ as the one and true God. He was arrested, taken to prison and subjected to unbearable torture. He was beheaded and what was left of his body was transported to Egypt. He was buried there, and subsequently the place developed into a great pilgrimage/worship center. His memory is commemorated on November 11. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
