Saint John the Baptist was a disciple of Jesus Christ and a son of the high priest Zacharias and his wife Elizabeth. Until his thirtieth year, he lived an ascetical life in the desert of Judaea, completely dedicated to prayer, fasting and spiritual perfection. He wore camel furs, girded himself with a leather belt and ate only locusts and wild honey. He had all of the qualities of a great and eminent preacher of the divine word. He met the Son of God, who sought baptism from him in the waters of the River Jordan. The words of the Forerunner bothered the Pharisees as well as the Tetrarch of Galilee and Perea, Herod Antipas, when he rebuked him for his illegal cohabitation with Herodias, the wife of his living brother. For this reason, he had him arrested and imprisoned. At his birthday celebration, Herod asked his daughter Salome to dance and vowed that he would give her whatever she desired. Herodias, who envied John, took the opportunity to encourage her daughter to ask for the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. Hence, John was beheaded. Two of the many feasts dedicated to the Saint are his Synaxis on the 7th of January and his Beheading on the 29th of August. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
