Saint Eustathios was an officer in Rome. When the emperor Trajan learned that he had converted to Christianity, the former stripped him of his high military office and exiled him together with his family. Years later, when Trajan found himself in dire military straits, he remembered his most competent officer, Eustathios. Trajan reinstated him, and Eusthathios contributed decisively to victory with especial effectiveness. However, Trajan’s successor, Hadrian, required Eustathios to be present at sacrifices to the idolaters’ gods. Naturally, Eustathios refused; both he and his family were tortured. Finally, they were martyred in a heated copper bull. He is commemorated on 20 September. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
