Saint Eleutherios was ordained a priest at a young age. He worked with zeal to instruct his flock and devoted himself to philanthropy. At twenty, he became bishop of Illyricum, which eventually caused him to be beheaded. He is considered the helper of pregnant women, granting them “freedom” from pregnancy when their babies are born (a good wish that is commonly used in Greece). He is commemorated on 15 December.

Saint Eleutherios was born in the 2nd century in Greece to wealthy parents. Orphaned from his father, his mother, Anthia, raised him in accordance with the Gospel. He visited Rome with her, where he was ordained deacon at 15 by the bishop Anikitos; three years later, he was ordained a priest. In this role, Eleutherios worked with zeal to instruct his flock and devoted himself to philanthropy. Later, at twenty years of age he became bishop of Illyricum, present-day Albania. When Septimius Severus was informed of Eleutherios’ Christian activities, he ordered the latter’s arrest. After many tortures, Eleutherios was led to the stadium at Rome by the idolaters. The wild animals, though, did not touch him. For this reason, he was beheaded together with his mother. It should be noted that he is considered the helper of pregnant women, granting them “freedom” from pregnancy when their babies are born (a good wish that is commonly used in Greece). He is commemorated on 15 December. This original icon was painted on Mt. Athos, by the monks of the Holy Koutloumousian Cell of Saint John the Theologian.
