Saint Jerome was born in 345 AD in Stridoni, Dalmatia to virtuous Christian parents who sent him to Rome to study. After moving away from youthful perversions, he retired to the desert of Chalkida in Syria, where he led an ascetic life. Then he returned to Constantinople, where he met Gregory Nazianzen and Gregory of Nyssa. From there he went to Rome, enjoying special appreciation for his learning and writing production. But his relationship with a wealthy but pious widow, Paula, and her daughters, forced him to flee with them and go to Bethlehem. There they built two monasteries, one for men and one for women, in which they stayed. Saint Jerome died in 420 AD and his holy relic is housed in the Temple of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. His memory is commemorated on June 15. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
