Saint David was born around the year 450 AD in northern Mesopotamia. He went to Thessaloniki and entered initially the Monastery of the Holy Martyrs Theodore and Mercurius. When the Emperor Justinian removed the northern regions of Illyricum from the ecclesiastical jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Thessaloniki, the Saint was asked to intervene by the Archbishop, because the Emperor was attempting to diminish the city by moving the chief see of the region. The Saint went before the Senate in dramatic fashion, holding in his hands lit incense. This was effective, and the Emperor willingly accepted the Archbishop’s request to leave Thessaloniki as it was. With this good news, the Saint set sail for Thessaloniki. He would only be able to see his city again from afar, because as soon as the boat turned the cape, he gave up his spirit to God. His memory is honoured on the 26th of June.
