Saint Philotheos was born in 1526 AD in Chrysoupolis of Macedonia. At the age of 25 years old, he went to the Holy Monastery of Dionysiou on Mount Athos, where his great ascetical struggles made him an example for the other monks. Later, in search of greater silence, he pretended to be sick and to have lost his hearing, and he withdrew to a cave a little outside the monastery. There, he showed himself to be a miraculous ascetic and a victor against the demons. When his pretended illness was discovered, he was forced to change his place of residence, so that he would not create trouble. At his new dwelling place, he obtained three disciples. God rewarded him for his many labours with the grace of clairvoyance. He died peacefully at the age of 84 years old in 1610 AD. His memory is honoured on the 21st of October.
