Holy Elder Sophrony (Sacharov) was born in 1896 in Moscow. He was the second child of a family with 9 children. He studied at the State School for the Fine Arts in his homeland, and in 1925, he left for Mount Athos. There, he settled down at the Holy Monastery of Saint Panteleimon. Not long after, in 1959, Saint Sophrony left to establish the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Saint John the Baptist in Essex, England, of which he was the founder and spiritual father. In all of his preaching, he taught the faithful to have love in their hearts. He reposed in the Lord on July 11, 1993. Almost three decades later, the Holy and Sacred Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate proceeded to canonize him as a saint of the Church. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
