Saint Seraphim was born in Kursk, Russia on July 19th, 1759 AD. At the age of ten years old, he began to learn with zeal the Holy Scriptures, but he suddenly became gravely sick without any hope of recovery. At a crucial point in the course of his illness, he saw the Mother of God in his sleep. She promised him that he would visit him and heal him. She kept her promise. In return, the young man abandoned his father’s house in the city of Kursk and went to become a monk at the Monastery of Sarov. On August 13th, 1786 AD, he became a monk. On September 2nd, 1793 AD, he was ordained to the priesthood. With the blessing of the Abbot, however, he left the Monastery and withdrew to the thick forests of Sarov. He spent fifteen years in complete isolation, in strict fasting, unceasing prayer and study of the Divine Word. At the end of his life as a hermit, he returned to the Monastery of Sarov and enclosed himself in a tomb, completely alone. He heard the confessions of many and healed the sick.
