Saint Romanus was born in Emesa of Syria and was of Hebrew descent. Initially, he was appointed Deacon of the Church in Beirut. Later on, he went to Constantinople and lived in the monastic enclosure attached to the Church of the Theotokos. During an all-night vigil in the Church of the Theotokos in Blachernae, on the day of Christmas, his soul was filled with such contrition that, when he returned to his cell, he saw the Mother of God in a dream. She held out to him a book and told him to swallow the book. Under the influence of the dream, Romanus composed the hymn for the birth of Christ “The Virgin today gives birth to He who is above being, and the earth offers a cave to the Unapproachable One”. From this moment, the poetic inspiration of Saint Romanus was inextinguishable and he showed himself to a great melodist and poet of the Church. He wrote thousands of compositions, of which only a tenth are preserved. His memory is honoured on the 1st of October. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
