Saint Raphael was from Myloi of Ithaca and was born in the year 1410 AD. Before becoming a priest, he had a career in the Byzantine army. After his tonsure as a monk, he was ordained to the priesthood, as well as given the honour of being an Archimandrite and Diocesan Chancellor. A few years before the fall of Constantinople, after many travels, the Saint found himself in Macedonia and became an ascetic there. As soon as Constantinople fell into the hands of the Turks, Saint Raphael sailed with his entourage to Mytilene. He and his fellow monks established themselves in the old Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos, where he was elected as Abbot. After several years, in the year 1463 AD, Lesvos fell into the hands of the Turks, who in a raid on the monastery arrested Saint Raphael and Saint Nikolaos on Great Thursday of the same year. They were put to harsh and terrible tortures. Saint Raphael was put to martyrdom by being slaughtered in the cruellest fashion. His memory is honoured two days after Holy Pascha. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
