Saint Paul lived in the 10th century AD and was son of noble Byzantines. He left Constantinople as a beggar and went to Mount Athos anonymously. Near the current site of the Monastery of Xeropotamou, which he would go on to found, he set up his ascetical hut, where he slept on the floor and used a rock for a pillow. The desire for even greater stillness pushed him to leave the Monastery of Xeropotamou, and so he went to the foot of the peninsula, where he was forced to build a new monastery because of his many disciples. Originally dedicated to Saint George, it is known today as the Monastery of Saint Paul. He knew the time of his death for some time before it occurred, and he made sure to be prepared for his departure from this life. Texts by Saint Paul are preserved at the Monastery of Xeropotamou. His memory is honoured on the 28th of July. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
