Saint Panagiotis the New Martyr hailed from the Pelopponese and served in the court of a Turkish nobleman, Osman Efentis. When the Turk went the Mosque of Omar in Jerusalem, Panagiotis went with him. The fanatical Turks believed that Panagiotis, by entering the mosque, had desecrated it and they accused him before the Pasha of Damascus. The Pasha asked the young man to accept Islam if he wished to avoid death. On hearing this, Panagiotis courageously declared before him and many Muslims, “Christ is the Son of the Living God! Put me to death! I am not afraid. Christ is Risen!” Then and there they cut off his head on the 5th of April, 1820 AD. His Holy Relics can be found in the Monastery of the Holy Forerunner in Jerusalem. His memory is honoured on the 5th of April. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
