Saint Nicephorus was born in Constantinople in 758 AD. He was nourished by his parents on the living streams of the Holy Scripture. Gifted with particular intellectual and spiritual abilities, he obtained an excellent theological education. Quickly, however, he withdrew to a piece of land along the Bosporus, where he devoted himself to ascetical practice and study of the Holy Scriptures. But he was obliged by the Emperor to take on the administration of the great poorhouse in Constantinople. Before he died, Patriarch Tarasius of Constantinople chose Nicephorus as his successor, and so he was called to the Ecumenical Throne. He waged harsh struggles in favour of the veneration of the Holy Icons against the iconoclasts. In 813, however, when the impious Leon V the Armenian took the imperial throne, a long, merciless persecution of the iconodules broke out. He suffered many hardships in this time. Finally, worn down by his circumstances, he gave up his spirit to God on June 2nd, 822 AD. Work of the iconographic studio of the Brotherhood Ch.E.
