Saint Neophytos was born in Lefkara of Cyprus in 1134 AD. At a young age, against the will of his parents, he chose to follow the monastic life. He first went to the monastery of Saint Chrysostom on Mount Koutsoventi, where wished to stay and live an ascetic life. After five years of doing obedience in the orchard of the monastery, with the blessing of the abbot, he went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He stayed there for a short time and when he returned to Cyprus, he became a monk at the Monastery of Saint Chrysostom. In September of 1159 AD, he chose to carve out his enclosure in Pafos; he remained there as a hermit for forty years. In order to avoid contact with the world, he carved his enclosure into the rocks and only came out to speak with others on Sundays. He was later ordained to the priesthood in 1170 AD by the Bishop of Pafos, Vasileios Kinnamos. The Saint reposed in deep old age. His holy relics are kept to this day at the monastery that bears his name in Pafos, Cyprus. His memory is honoured on the 12th of April. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
