Saint Maximus the Greek was born in Arta in 1470 AD. He was a student of John Moschos and he completed his studies in Italy. He also attended the Greek school of Venice and afterwards, he pursued further studies at the Universities of Padua, Florence and Milan. In 1505 AD, he went to Mount Athos, where he was tonsured a monk. Several years later, in 1516 AD, he went to Russia at the behest of the Russian Tsar Ivanovich in order to translate various liturgical and theological texts into Slavonic. There, however, he was slandered by Daniel, the influential abbot of the Monastery of Volokalamsk. On account of such slander, Maximus faced many hardships including exile, excommunication, and imprisonment –among other difficulties. In the end, he went to the Lavra of Saint Sergius in 1551 AD, where he drew his last breath on January 21st, 1556 AD. During his life, he composed many apologetical works as well as interpretations of Scripture. His memory is honoured on the 21st of January. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
