Saint Cyril was born to wealthy parents from the Greek society in Alexandria in 370 AD. He lived and worked during the reign of Theodosius the Younger. Nephew of archbishop Theophilus of Alexandria, Cyril received an excellent theological formation, so that he became the obvious successor to his uncle’s archiepiscopal see. When the Third Ecumenical Council was convened in 431 AD in Ephesus, Cyril was the presiding bishop and contributed to the refutation of the heresies of the impious Nestorius against the person of the Most Holy Theotokos and Mother of God. After many years of spiritual and pastoral labours, Cyril gave up his spirit to the Lord peacefully on the 27th of June in 444 AD, having occupied worthily his patriarchal throne for almost 32 years. Saint Anastasius the Sinaite justifiably called him the “seal of the Fathers”. His memory is honoured on the 9th of June. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
