Saint Cosmas was an apostle for the Gospel during the dark years of the Turkish Yoke in Greece. Saint Cosmas was born in the village of Taxiarchis Nafpaktias. His parents were pious, they raised him in the ways and counsels of the Lord. At twenty years old, he went to Mount Athos in order to study at the newly established school at Vatopedi. Knowing that the Greek nation was in danger, the Saint did not cease in his fervour day and night to teach the enslaved Greeks the Holy Scripture. Once he received the appropriate permission from the Patriarch Seraphim, he taught these “slaves” the word of God throughout of Greece, beginning with Constantinople. Wherever he went, he built schools, churches and multitudes of people “drank” from the “nectar” of his holy teaching. In the end, the Jews, in cooperation with the Turks, had the Saint hanged to death out of jealousy in Kolikontasi in Northern Epirus in 1779 AD. His memory is honoured on the 24th of August. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
