Joseph was the youngest son of Jacob and Rachel. He was driven away, however, because of his brothers’ jealous of his virtuous life. In the beginning, they threw him into a pit and tried to trick their father. Once this plot failed, they sold him to merchants, who in turn sold him to Potiphar, the Pharaoh of Egypt. There, having rejected the romantic advances of Potiphar’s wife, Joseph was slandered by her, and the Pharaoh threw him in jail. Later, however, the Pharaoh saw a strange dream and needed an interpreter. Joseph interpreted the dream, saying that seven years of good fortune and seven years of famine and drought would come to the country. His interpretative abilities pleased the Pharaoh, and so he gave Joseph many honours and responsibilities in his court. Joseph used his authority excellently to take care of the people. During the difficult years of famine, his brothers who had sold him into slavery came to him to ask for help. He forgave them and invited them and their parents to stay with him in Egypt permanently. His memory is celebrated on Great and Holy Monday. Work of the iconographic studio of the Brotherhood Ch.E.
