Elder Joseph the Hesychast was born in 1896 on the island of Paros. One day, he met a monastic elder from the Holy Mountain, who inspired him to move to Athos. His first stop was Katounakia where he was hosted by the then living Elder Daniel of blessed memory. He and his companion Father Arsenios lived a carefree life together going from place to place, living ascetically on both the peak of Athos and in the lower surrounding areas. Elder Joseph was always uncompromising in his ascetical struggle and especially in his desire for prayer. He was extremely strict with himself, embracing all of the canons of monastic life. He fasted very much and kept vigil even more so, in order to tame his body and to weaken his passions. He passed through all of the stages of the spiritual life, and he knew through experience all of the divine graces that accompany each one. Two grave illnesses, the one after the other, brought an end to his earthly life. During his last forty days, he ate nothing, receiving only holy communion each day. On the 14th of August, 1959 he gave up his spirit. Work of ARTIS GILDING & RESTORING.
