Saint John the Hesychast lived in the 8th century AD and was the disciple of Saint Gregory the Decapolite. From a young age, he was inspired by zeal for the ascetical life and he went away to find Saint Gregory the Decapolite, perhaps on Mount Olympus, to become a monk and learn the monastic way of life. His obedience to his teacher became very well-known, and Saint Gregory rejoiced and glorified God on its account. After the death of his teacher, he followed his example and travelled to many foreign lands. He headed to Jerusalem to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Places. There, he was able to cultivate even further his piety, contrition, and devotion to God with new fervour and energy. Saint John went to the Monastery of Chariton where he reposed in peace. His memory is celebrated by the Orthodox Church on the 18th of April. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
