Saint Theophilus was born in Zichne of Macedonia in 1460 AD, to virtuous parents, who loved both God and their fellow man. In his homeland, he learned his first letters and showed a particular love for learning as he continued in his studies, as well as a special zeal in his reading of the Holy Scripture. He became a friend and associate of both Acacius, bishop of Rentine as well as Patriarch Nephon, famous for his holiness. He was sent by Nephon to Alexandria in order to verify certain miracles performed by the Patriarch Joachim. The latter was said to have moved a mountain and to have drunk poison without being harmed. After confirming the truth of these miracles, the divine Theophilus returned to Constantinople and was designated as notary (Notarios) of the Great Church of Christ. After making a pilgrimage to Sinai, Antioch and Jersualem, he then went to Mount Athos where he spent time as an ascetic at the Monasteries of Vatopedi and Iviron. Finally, he became a hermit at the Cell of St. Basil in Kapsala near Karyes. He knew the time of his death beforehand, and he met his end peacefully. When his relics were discovered, they were streaming a fragrant myrrh, and hence he came to called Myrrh-Streamer. His memory is honoured on the 8th of July. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
