Saint Theodore of Sanaxar was born in 1719 in the village of Romanova, in the eparchy of Yaroslav. At a young age, he was recruited to serve in the imperial guard in Preobrazenski of Saint Petersburg, where he quickly rose to the rank of officer. After an unpleasant incident in the guard, he abandoned the world. He decided to live in fasting and prayer in the forest, near the banks of the river Divna. Because he did not have official documents, he was arrested and tortured. When his true identity was discovered, he was brought to Saint Petersburg to be tried before the Empress Elizabeth. The Empress forgave him on one condition: that he become a monk in Saint Petersburg at the Lavra of Saint Alexander Nevsky. And so, on the 13th of August, 1748, he was tonsured a monk. He remained at the Lavra for 10 years. Afterwards, he and disciples went to Sarov, where they stayed for two years. When the number of his disciples began to increase, he asked the fathers at Sarov if they would allow him and his disciples to live in the abandoned Monastery of Sanaxar. On the 13th of December, 1762, he was ordained a priestmonk. But, shortly thereafter, he was driven into exile by false accusations and was imprisoned for 9 years. Finally, in 1783, he was able to return to his monastery, where he reposed in peace in 1791. His memory is honoured on the 19th of February. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
