Saint Theodore “Tyron” was born in the village of Amasea, by the Black Sea, and lived during the reign of the emperors Maximian, Galerius and Maximinus. He is called Tyron, because he belonged to the battalion of “Tiri”, meaning in Latin the new recruits, administered by the prepositus Vringas. He was brought before the prepositus because it was rumoured that he was a Christian and placed under interrogation. He openly confessed his faith in Christ before him without hesitation. The administrator Vringas did not wish to proceed immediately with his arrest and punishment, but instead left him to think for a time and give an answer later. He believed that Theodore would change his mind and end up offering sacrifice to the idols. The Great Martyr, not only remained steadfast in his faith, but even burned down the temple of Rhea, the mother of the gods, along with her idol. Then, he was immediately arrested and thrown by the pagans into a lit furnace, where he met his martyric death. His memory is celebrated on the 17th of February. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
