Saint Theodore “Stratelates” the General was born in Euchaita of Galatia and lived in Heraclea Pontica. A solider by profession, he was distinguished for his bravery and he quickly advanced to the highest ranks of the military hierarchy. In 320 AD, Licinius, then governor of Nicomedia, heard about how Theodore was a Christian and showed scorn for the traditional idols. Licinius went to Heraclea to meet with Theodore. Licinius extended a hand of friendship to him, hoping to draw him and other Christians away from Christ into the idol worship. One day, before the people, Licinius exhorted Theodore to offer sacrifice to the idols. Theodore refused and asked instead that the golden and silver statues of the gods be given to him, which he then broke into pieces and shared with the poor. Licinius accused Theodore as a deceiver that scorned the gods. On this pretext, the Saint was arrested and subjected to many forms of punishment and torture. Fearing the wrath of the mob, Licinius ordered the Saint’s beheading. The memory of Saint Theodore is honoured on the 8th of June. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
