Saint Theodore the New Martyr was born in Neochori of Constantinople. He was a painter in the palaces of the city. The Turks tried to draw him into the Islamic religion and at first were successful. The Saint, however, came to his senses and repented for apostasy. So he took refuge in Chios to live near a spiritual father, Saint Macarius of Corinth. He then went to Mytilene where he confessed his faith in Christ before the local authorities and renounced Islam. Saint Theodore was arrested, imprisoned and suffered many inhumane tortures. On Saturday morning, a little before his execution, the Saint asked for a quill from a Christian servant, and he wrote to the local bishop to send him Holy Communion. Once he had partaken of the Immaculate Mysteries, he was led to the place of his execution, to which he followed with great willingness. There he was hanged in 1774 AD. His relics remain to this day incorrupt in the Metropolitan Church of Mytilene. His memory is honoured on the 17th of February. Work of ARTIS GILDING AND RESTORING.
