Saint Ephraim was born in Trikala on September 14th, 1384 AD. At the age of 14, in order to avoid forced conversion to Islam and becoming a Janissary, he entered the then declining Stavropegic Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos on Amomon in the Attica region. Saint Ephraim followed Christ with fervent zeal and excelled with his brilliant life and ascetic labors in the Nea Makri region. He was even counted worthy to receive the great Mystery of the Priesthood and the blessing to serve at the Holy Altar. In 1424 AD, the Turks violently broke into the Monastery of the Annunciation of the Theotokos and slaughtered all of the Fathers of the Monastery. The Saint, however, was away in his cave, high up on the mountain, in prayer. As soon as he returned, he beheld, full of fear, the corpses of the Fathers. The next year, on September 14th, 1425 AD, the barbarians returned and found the Saint still alive. They arrested him and began to torture him, which ended on May 5th, 1426 AD, when he was hanged upside down from a tree. Saint Ephraim is celebrated twice a year, once on the 3rd of January for the finding of his holy relics, and a second time on the 5th of May, the day of his martyric end.
