Saint Eumenes of Gortyna hailed from Crete and, from a young age, submitted himself to many severities and ascetical practices. He was particularly distinguished by his great temperance. He was ordained to the priesthood and eventually became bishop of Gortyna, Crete. In this position, his virtue shone even brighter, and God granted him the grace and power to work miracles. Later, Eumenes went to Rome, where he strengthened the faithful with his divine teaching and miracles. Desiring, however, a more severe ascetical life, he went to the Thebaid of Upper Egypt, where the great ascetics then dwelled. While there, he gave up his spirit to God. His remains were taken to be buried in his episcopate in Crete. His memory is honoured on the 18th of September. Work of the iconographic studio of the Brotherhood Ch.E.
